By far the most common kind of solar panel mounting is an on-roof system. As the name suggests, the solar panels fix directly to the roof. On-roof solar panels, are a cost-effective solution. Providing excellent ventilation to your panels and optimal performance. When installing an on-roof solar system, metal hooks are drilled directly into the rafters of the roof. This involves sometimes removing and replacing some roof tiles. Vertical rails run across the hooks, to which your Solar PV panels are clamped. Finally, a weatherproof seal is applied around the hooks for maximum protection.
Additional elements may be added to this type of solar panel mounting, depending on the type of roof tile the property has. For example, to install solar panels onto a slate roof, the tile will be removed completely to install flashing around the roof hook.
In roof solar, or integrated solar panels are the ideal solution for new builds or anyone looking to re-roof there home. Many customers opt for an in-roof system because of the sleeker aesthetics. As the solar panel sit snugs within a tray, there is no space for birds to nest under and the panels appear flush with the rest of the roof. However, this does result in less air ventilation around the panels, resulting in a 5-10% lower efficiency.
Flat Roof solar refers to the installation of Solar Panels onto a roof which is almost level, with a pitch approximately between 1-10 degrees. Ground Mounted solar panels are a great option if your roof is unsuitable for solar PV, and you have land available. In some instances, you may have more land than roof space, so choosing ground-mounted solar panels would mean you can generate more solar energy. Ground mounted Solar panels are usually a great mounting solution for those who live in more rural locations, looking to install an off-grid solar system.

Solar power uses a process called the photovoltaic effect, which turns the sun’s radiation into electricity. Solar panels are made up of lots of photovoltaic cells containing silicon. When sunlight hits the silicon, it makes the electrons in them start moving around. This creates electricity that can be used to power our homes and businesses.
Solar panels generate most electricity when they’re on a south-facing roof that’s sloped at 41º, and isn’t shaded. It’s one of the first things our surveyors look at when checking your home’s right for solar. A good surveyor can talk you through how the panels’ position on your roof will affect their performance. Solar systems that face southwest and southeast are only about 15% less efficient than ones on a south-facing roof. Systems on east and west-facing roofs still work, but they’re less effective. This is because they don’t get as much sunlight throughout the day.
According to Rightmove’s Greener Homes report, it’s worth installing green tech that increases your home’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating – like solar panels. Boosting your rating from F to C, for example, can increase the value of your home by up to 15%. Our Energy Experts also found that installing 10 solar panels can increase your EPC rating by 1 band. For a 3-bedroom semi detached house, installing 10 solar panels would cost approximately £5000. But they could add much more value than they cost. Data also shows that 66% of property buyers are prioritising green tech in their search for a home. Meaning there’s never been a better time to invest in things like solar panels.
